The Deal
In the beginning, the entire deck of cards is dealt evenly among the players. The number of players can vary from 3 to 6. Each player receives the same number of cards, and in subsequent rounds, the deal passes to the left.
The Play
The player holding the 2 of Clubs starts the game by leading with that card. Each player then plays a card of the same suit, if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they can play a card of any other suit. However, a player may not lead with a heart or the Queen of Spades until these cards have been "broken."
Once all players have played a card, the player who played the highest-ranking card of the leading suit wins the trick. The winner of the trick leads in the next trick.
Scoring
Scoring in Hearts occurs at the end of each hand. Players count the number of hearts and the Queen of Spades they have taken in tricks. Each heart is worth 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points. The player who has taken the Queen of Spades and the most hearts has "shot the moon" and scores 0 points, while every other player receives 26 points. If multiple players shoot the moon, they each receive 0 points, and all other players receive 26 points.
End of the Game
The game continues until one player reaches or exceeds the predetermined score (usually 100 points). Once the game ends, the player with the lowest score is declared the winner.
