Objective of the Game
The objective of Spades is to be the first partnership to reach 500 points. Points are scored by successfully predicting the number of tricks your partnership will take during each round and then taking that exact number of tricks.
Ranking of Cards
The cards in Spades are ranked from highest to lowest as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Spades are always considered trump cards, meaning they outrank all other suits.
Dealing the Cards
Each player is dealt 13 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The player to the left of the dealer starts the bidding process.
Bidding
In Spades, players bid the number of tricks they believe they can take during the round. The minimum bid is one, and the maximum bid is the total number of tricks available in the round. Bids are made in increments of one. The total number of tricks bid by all players must equal the total number of tricks available (13).
The bids must also follow a specific rule: no player can bid zero tricks, and the combined total number of tricks bid by both partnerships must be at least equal to the number of tricks available. For example, if one partnership bids 7, the other partnership must bid at least 6 or more.
Playing the Game
The player who won the bid leads the first trick. Each player must follow suit if possible; otherwise, they can play any card, including a spade. The player with the highest-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one.
Spades cannot be led until someone plays a spade on a previous trick or if it is the only suit remaining in the player's hand. When a player leads with a spade, it is called "breaking spades."
Scoring
After all the tricks have been played, each partnership counts the number of tricks they have taken. If a partnership meets or exceeds their bid, they score 10 points for each trick they predicted. If they fail to meet their bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they were short.
There are also special points called "bags" that are awarded when a partnership takes more tricks than they bid. Each set of 10 bags results in a 100-point penalty. The penalties are subtracted from the partnership's score.
Gameplay Continues
After scoring, the player to the left of the previous dealer becomes the new dealer, and a new round begins. The game continues until one partnership reaches or exceeds 500 points. The winning partnership is then declared the winner of the game.
