Hearts is a popular trick-taking card game that is played with four players. It belongs to a family of card games known as Whist, which also includes Bridge and Spades. The objective of Hearts is to score the fewest points by avoiding certain cards in the game.

The Play
The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand. Each player must then play a card of the same suit if they have one. If a player does not have a card of the led suit, they can play any card from their hand, including hearts or the Queen of Spades.
The player who plays the highest-ranked card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next trick. However, there are restrictions on playing certain cards:
- The first card played in a trick cannot be a heart or the Queen of Spades.
- Until hearts have been played in a trick, players may not play a heart or the Queen of Spades unless they have no other options.
- The Queen of Spades cannot be played in a trick until a heart has been played in a previous trick (known as "breaking hearts").
Scoring
At the end of each hand, the players count the number of hearts and the Queen of Spades they have taken in tricks. These cards count as penalty points. After scoring, a new round begins, and the deal passes to the left.
Shooting the Moon
In Hearts, there is a special rule called "shooting the moon." If a player manages to capture all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades in a single hand, they score zero points, and all other players are awarded 26 penalty points. Shooting the moon is a difficult feat to achieve and can significantly change the outcome of the game.
