Intermediate Level Tricks for Intelligent Dogs

Dogs are known for their intelligence and ability to learn tricks. Once your dog has mastered basic commands such as sit, stay, and lie down, it's time to take their training to the next level. Intermediate level tricks help stimulate your dog's mind, strengthen their bond with you, and provide them with mental and physical exercise. Here are some fun and challenging tricks to teach your intelligent dog.

1. Roll Over

This trick is a classic crowd-pleaser. Start by having your dog lie down. Hold a treat close to their nose and slowly move it towards their shoulder. As your dog follows the treat, their body will naturally roll over. As they complete the roll, reward them with the treat and praise. Repeat this process until they can perform the trick smoothly.

2. High Five

Teaching your dog to give a high five is a cute and impressive trick. Begin by giving the command "sit" and hold out your hand, palm facing towards your dog. Say "high five" and gently tap their paw. When their paw makes contact with your hand, reward them with a treat and praise. Practice this trick regularly until they master it.

3. Balance Treat

This trick works on improving your dog's balance and focus. Start by having your dog sit or stand. Place a treat on their nose and give the command "balance." Slowly walk a short distance and encourage them to maintain the treat's position on their nose. Once they reach the desired spot, give the command "take it" and let them enjoy the treat.

4. Spin

Spinning is a fun and enjoyable trick to teach your dog. Begin by having your dog stand in front of you. Hold a treat close to their nose, and as they follow it, slowly move it in a circular motion. Their body will naturally turn as they follow the treat. Reward them with the treat and praise once they complete the spin. Practice this trick in both directions to ensure equal strength and coordination.

5. Fetch Specific Objects

This trick takes retrieving to a whole new level. Start by teaching your dog the names of different objects such as a ball, toy, or bone. Once they are familiar with the names, place the objects in different locations and ask them to fetch a specific one by its name. Reward and praise them when they bring back the correct object. Gradually increase the complexity by adding more objects and different locations.

6. Play Dead

This trick is a crowd favorite and adds a playful element to your dog's repertoire. Begin by having your dog lie down on their side. Take a treat and hold it close to their nose, moving it towards their shoulder. Their body will naturally collapse onto their side. Reward them with the treat and praise when they play dead. Practice this trick regularly to reinforce their skills.

7. Ring Bell

Teaching your dog to ring a bell when they need to go outside can be incredibly convenient. Hang a bell near the door at your dog's nose height. Every time you're about to take them outside, say "ring the bell" and guide their nose towards it. When they touch or ring the bell with their nose, open the door and let them go out. Repeat this process consistently so they associate ringing the bell with going outside.

Remember, patience and positive reinforcement are key when teaching your dog intermediate level tricks. Break down the training sessions into short, frequent ones and always end on a positive note. Enjoy the process and celebrate their progress.
