How to Play Hearts
Hearts is a classic trick-taking card game that is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The objective of the game is to score as few points as possible. In this article, we will guide you through the rules and provide some strategies to improve your gameplay.
Setup

The goal in Hearts is to avoid taking certain cards, namely hearts and the queen of spades. The player who takes the highest card of the suit led, or the highest heart, wins the trick and leads the next one.
During the first trick of each round, players must not play any hearts or the queen of spades. After the first trick, hearts can be played in subsequent tricks, but the queen of spades cannot be played until it has been "broken" (played on a trick by someone who does not have a card of the suit led).
Players must always try their best to follow suit, which means playing a card of the same suit that was led. If a player has no cards of the led suit, they can play any other card in their hand. However, if hearts have not been broken, a player cannot play a heart or the queen of spades.
Scoring
At the end of each round, players tally up their points. Each heart card is worth 1 point, and the queen of spades is worth 13 points. However, the ace of hearts is worth a whopping 15 points. The objective is to minimize the points you collect throughout the game.
Once a player reaches a predetermined number of points (commonly 100 points), the game ends. The player with the lowest score at this point is the winner.
Strategy
Here are a few strategies to help you improve your Hearts gameplay:
- Try to avoid winning tricks that contain hearts or the queen of spades, especially in the early stages of the game.
- Consider "shooting the moon" if you have a strong hand. This means you try to take all the hearts and the queen of spades to give all other players a massive score.
- Pay attention to the cards played, especially the queen of spades and hearts. This information will help you make better decisions during gameplay.
- If you have a lot of high hearts, try to get rid of them in the early rounds before hearts are broken.
- Try to count cards to figure out which ones haven't been played yet. This will give you an advantage in predicting what other players might have.
