Cribbage is a classic card game that has been enjoyed by players of all ages for centuries. It is a game that combines luck and strategy and is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The game involves two players and a unique wooden scoring board called a cribbage board.
Objective of the Game
The objective of Cribbage is to score points by playing cards in combinations to reach a target score of 121. Each player takes turns playing cards and earns points for their combinations. The game is divided into two distinct parts: the play and the show. The play involves the players taking turns laying down cards and counting their scores, while the show is where the remaining cards in hand and the dealer's crib are scored.
Scoring Combinations
In Cribbage, there are various scoring combinations that players can achieve:
- Fifteens: Each combination of cards that adds up to 15 scores 2 points.
- Pairs: Two cards of the same rank score 2 points.
- Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of any suit score 1 point per card.
- Flushes: If all four cards of the hand or crib are of the same suit, it scores 4 points. An additional point is awarded if the starter card is also of the same suit.
- Nobs: If a player has a Jack of the same suit as the starter card, they score 1 point.
- Go: Players earn 1 point when they make the total value of cards played during their turn reach 31 exactly. After this, the opponent starts the count again.
- His Heels: The player who deals the cards scores 2 points if the starter card is a Jack.
Dealing and Gameplay
At the beginning of the game, the dealer is determined by cutting the deck. The player who reveals the lowest card becomes the dealer. The dealer shuffles the deck and deals six cards to each player. Each player then discards two cards into the crib, which will later be scored by the dealer.
Once the crib is set, the non-dealer starts the play by laying down a card face-up on the table. The players take turns laying down their cards, announcing the cumulative total each time and making sure it does not exceed 31. The players continue until no more cards can be played without exceeding 31. The last player to play a card scores 1 point for "Go."
After the play, the dealer reveals the four cards in the crib and the starter card from the deck. The players then score their hands and any resulting combinations from the crib. The dealer scores last.
Winning the Game
The first player to reach a total score of 121 or more points wins the game. If both players reach this score in the same round, the dealer, who has a slight advantage, wins.
