Basic Rules of Cornhole

Cornhole, also known as bag toss, is a popular outdoor game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. The objective of the game is to toss bean bags onto a raised platform with a hole in it, trying to score points. If you are new to this exciting game, here are some basic rules to help you get started:

1. Setting up the game:

First, you'll need a cornhole board and bean bags. The standard cornhole board is 4 feet by 2 feet with a hole that measures 6 inches in diameter. Place the boards 27 feet apart from each other, facing each other.

2. Choosing sides and starting:

Decide who will play first by flipping a coin or any other fair method. The winning player/team can choose to toss first or second. Teams can be made up of one or two players, with two players on each team taking turns tossing their bean bags from one end.

3. Scoring:

The scoring system in cornhole is simple. A bag that goes through the hole is worth 3 points. A bag that lands on the platform and stays on it is worth 1 point. If a bag touches the ground before landing on the board, it is considered a foul and removed from play. The opposing team's score is deducted by the amount of points scored by the fouling team.

4. Gameplay:

Teams take turns tossing the bean bags towards the opposite cornhole board. The toss should be underhand and cannot exceed the front edge of the board. Players must throw alternatingly and complete all four tosses before the other team starts their turn.

5. Cancelling points:

If both teams have bags that land in the hole or on the board, the points cancel each other out. Only the difference in scores is considered. For example, if Team A scores 3 points and Team B scores 2 points in a round, Team A will gain 1 point for that round.

6. Winning the game:

The game continues until one team reaches or exceeds 21 points. However, teams should agree on the final winning score before starting the game. It can be 21, 25, or any other predetermined number.

7. Overtime rules:

In case of a tie at the end of the normal game, an overtime period is played. Each team throws one bag at a time until one team scores more points than the other in a round.

8. Fouls and penalties:

Several fouls can occur during the game, resulting in penalties. Common fouls include stepping over the front of the board while tossing, not throwing within the time limit, and interfering with opponents' throws. Penalties can result in lost points or disqualification depending on the severity of the violation.

9. Etiquette:

Lastly, it's important to play with good sportsmanship and respect for both your opponents and the game. Be polite and avoid distractions or intentional bad behavior that may disrupt the gameplay.
