Cribbage is a popular card game that has been enjoyed by many for centuries. It is a game that combines luck, skill, and strategy. Understanding the basic rules and scoring of cribbage is essential to winning and enjoying this classic card game.
Objective of the Game
The objective of cribbage is to be the first player to reach a total of 121 points. Points are scored during the play and the cribbing phase of each hand.
The Deck
Cribbage is played with a standard 52-card deck. The cards have point values as follows:
- Ace: 1 point
- 2 to 10: Face value (2 is 2 points, 3 is 3 points, and so on)
- Jack, Queen, King: 10 points
The Cribbage Board
A cribbage board is used to keep score during the game. The board consists of a series of holes or pegs. Each player has two pegs, and they move them along the board to track their score.
The Play
Cribbage is played with two to three players. The game begins with each player receiving six cards. The non-dealer cuts the deck, and the dealer reveals the top card from the bottom portion of the deck (the rest becomes the "crib"). This card is known as the "starter" and will be used later for scoring.
The non-dealer then starts the play by playing a card face up on the table. The players take turns playing one card at a time and announcing the running total of all played cards. The sum of the cards played should not exceed 31. Face cards are worth 10 points, and all other cards have their face value.
If a player cannot play a card without exceeding 31, they say "Go" and the other player continues until they cannot play without exceeding 31. The player who played the last card scores one point.
Scoring
During the play, players score points for various combinations of cards. Here are some basic scoring rules:
- Fifteen: Any combination of cards that add up to 15 scores 2 points.
- Pair: Playing a card that makes a pair with the previous card is worth 2 points.
- Run: Playing consecutive cards (regardless of suit) scores 1 point per card. For example, a run of 3 cards would score 3 points.
- Flush: If all four cards of the play are of the same suit, the player scores 4 points.
The Crib
Once the play is completed, the players each discard two cards into the crib. The dealer then adds the starter card to the crib. When scoring the crib, all the rules for the play apply along with a few additional rules for combinations.
After the crib has been scored, it is the dealer's turn to count their hand. The starter card is used as a fifth card in the player's hand. Scoring follows similar rules as during the play and the cribbing phase.
Winning the Game
The first player to reach a total of 121 points wins the game. If both players reach 121 points in the same hand, one additional "winning hole" is played, and the player with the higher score at the end of that hole wins.
